Help Mary Nthenya: A Life Marked by Early Hardship

Mary Nthenya’s life has been shaped by challenges that no one should ever have to face. At a young age, she became paralyzed from the waist down due to a medical condition. From that moment, her independence was taken away. As her condition progressed, she also lost her ability to speak, leaving her unable to express herself or defend herself in a world that can often be unkind.

Her elderly mother became her full-time caregiver — lifting her, feeding her, bathing her, and ensuring she survives each day. With limited resources and declining strength, her mother has carried this responsibility with unwavering love and determination.

A Devastating Violation

Mary’s vulnerability was tragically exploited when she was sexually assaulted. She became pregnant and later gave birth to a beautiful girl at the age of 15. The trauma of the assault deeply affected her mental health, leaving her mentally unstable and even more dependent on her mother’s care.

The perpetrator was never found, leaving the family without justice or closure.

A Second Tragedy

Before they could recover from the first trauma, Mary was assaulted again. During this second attack, she became pregnant once more and later gave birth to a boy. Sadly, her son is partially deaf (hears with one ear) and cannot speak, and now requires specialized education and care. He attends a special needs school, which comes with additional financial demands for tuition, therapy, and learning support. Her daughter is currently in primary school and also requires school fees, uniforms, books, and daily necessities to continue her education.

An Overwhelming Responsibility

Today, Mary remains paralyzed and unable to speak. She depends entirely on her aging mother for survival. Her mother now carries the heavy responsibility of:

  1. Caring for Mary’s daily physical needs
  2. Protecting her from further harm
  3. Raising and educating two young children
  4. Managing medical and educational expenses

The financial strain is overwhelming. School fees for both children are difficult to sustain. Basic needs such as food, hygiene supplies, medical care, and clothing are constant challenges.

The Urgent Need

This family urgently needs support for:

  1. School fees for the daughter in primary school
  2. Specialized school fees and therapy support for the son in special needs school
  3. Medical care and mobility support for Mary
  4. Safe and secure living conditions
  5. Daily necessities including food, clothing, and hygiene supplies

A Call for Compassion

Mary’s story is one of pain, resilience, and a mother’s unconditional love. Her children deserve education, stability, and a future filled with opportunity. Her elderly mother deserves relief and support as she carries responsibilities that no one should face alone.

Yes. Sponsors are welcome to support either child individually. You may choose to pay school fees directly to the primary school or the special needs school upon coordination with the family representative. Transparent arrangements can be made to ensure your support goes directly toward the child’s education.
Absolutely. Material support such as school uniforms, books, hearing support equipment, therapy aids, food supplies, hygiene products, and clothing are highly appreciated. All forms of practical assistance help reduce the financial burden on the grandmother and improve the children’s well-being.
In the local area, average primary school fees range between modest termly contributions depending on whether the school is public or private. However, special needs schools typically require higher fees due to specialized instruction, therapy services, and learning support resources. Additional costs include uniforms, books, and examination fees.
This may be possible with proper legal arrangements, full agreement from the grandmother, and compliance with all child protection and immigration laws. The grandmother must give informed consent, and formal guardianship or sponsorship processes would need to be followed. It is important to note that the girl is considered the greatest source of hope for Mary’s emotional strength and continued will to live. Any long-term arrangement would require careful discussion to ensure it serves the best interests of both the child and the family.
